Its worth the money to upgrade because you can actually play a challenging game. Good app.
Dice rolls seem balanced. Computer play is conservative, but well played. An aggressive player will generally have no trouble against the computer on hard, if the rolls holdup
The app is a good start for middle to beginner players, but its very predictable in the more advanced games. It would be nice to have a more professional level.
I beat the computer consistently. The only time the computer wins is through doubles, the game is not very good. I have seen it in other backgammon apps. Multiple runs of doubles by the computer, as many as five or six in a row. So ridiculous it is no fun.
This is a good implementation of backgammon, but there is one major bug. The statistics NEVER update. Hey, that should be easy to fix. Also a suggestion: allow a double tap on a stack of men two move two at a time, together after rolling doubles
It happens waaaay to often that when my opponent gets too many doubles at the end of the game in "hard" mode. I have played quite a bit and took notice. Not fair guys, need a bit of code revision.
Upgraded to full version, still not challenging. I played 6 games in a row and never once got a double, but Al got plenty. Game moves kinda fast and a few times I swear he took an extra turn on a double. Board not pretty either. If other games out there werent rigged, Id delete this.
Enjoyable playing. Since Im about even on wins at the hard level, Id say this game isnt for those who want a really challenging game but great for those of us who want to start learning the game.
The game is stacked in favor of the computer, which gets too many favorable rolls and a disproportionate number of double rolls.
Im always suspicious of backgammon games. Do they cheat? But this is the best, seemingly fair game for the iPhone I have seen. Board is a bit awkward, but you get used to it. I wish it would show stats about doubles after each game.
It is challenging, and fun
The dice roles seem rigged on hardest level. An imbalance on roles that favor AI is really an annoyance especially when youre way ahead at the piece removal stage and the AI gets several doubles in a row and you only get 1-3 or 1-2 etc several times in a row. I think the program could use a dice roll entry feature. So enter your own dice rolls and take the suspicions of programmed cheating away. Please put in a way to undo a mistyped refusal of a doubling. You shouldnt be forces to loose if you hit the wrong button by mistake. The graphics are great on this game.
Graphics are good. Responsiveness is fast. The Easy and Normal options are too easy for an experienced player. With those, the computer makes some real bonehead moves, like leaving single pieces uncovered (blot) for no good reason at all. When I started using this app on those options, I won 100% of my games. On Hard, games are a challenge, though I win more often than I lose. Nevertheless, the Hard option is like playing against a human opponent. Lots of good options for sound, board appearance, direction of play, highlighting of possible moves. Contains doubling cube and undo. Reviews of other Backgammon apps claim they "cheat," giving the computer just the rolls it needs, more doubles, etc. I do not see that with this app.
I have tired several backgammon games trying to find one that actually plays like a real game and does not seem to bias the game toward the machine in the difficult mode. Unfortunately you have to pay for the full version to be able to play it in difficult mode. But it works. The only fix I would like to see, is that when you use the "undo" button to go back an review a sequence, when you go forward again , the game does not retain the original dice rolls.
I decided to pay for this game thinking it would stop cheating. The computer throws doubles more than you would see after a fifth of vodka. The moves that the computer makes are always based on what it needs to win. An exercise in futility when it could be a great game.
The difficult level isnt so much more difficult... Its just your opponent gets better rolls. And once you start to win... Your opponent starts getting better rolls! Every. Time. It is pretty annoying. Im giving the game 4 stars because it is a great way to teach my kids how to play. And it will pass the time, but it isnt very challenging. I wish the game would play smarter instead of just getting 4 doubles in a row.
Everything about the game is well done, but the "hard" level tends to leave a lot of open pieces that a real strategist would never do. Basically, I have never lost a match to 15.
Others have complained that the doubles are not distributed fairly. My complaint is that if it offers you a double, and you refuse, it gives itself 3 match points instead of only 1.
Great app, no crashes, great rules
